Choosing a splitboard, splitboard bindings and other splitboard equipment

Before you read this, it's a good idea to read our " choosing a snowboard " guide, which has lots of useful explanations for choosing a board that suits you. In addition, we have a few extra things to consider when choosing which splitboard/binding you want.

Choosing a splitboard

How much will you ride my board and what do you want it to be good for? Is weight a priority for you or should it be durable, maybe both? Will you want to ride backwards or maybe just one way?

We have many models, and many boards have a similar model for "solid" as a splitboard. Sometimes you can find more information about how the board is in the solid model. Some of the most common ones we sell are Jones Solution (called Flagship as a solid model), as well as TUR Labb and Tica (called Buteo and Pluv as solid models).

But let us know if you have any questions about which model you are looking for.

Jones and TUR splitboards come with Karakoram nose and tail hooks and Karakoram clips that sit between the bindings and nose/tail (stainless steel clip or ultraclip depending on the model). Korua uses Union clips and hooks, and their boards are a little cheaper even in production. That means you can get a board for a little less money =)

Choosing skins

There are also universal skins that come in different lengths (S, M, L), which fit all splitboards. They come with a knife/cutter to adjust the width.

We get a lot of questions about which is best, and unfortunately it's a matter of taste. There are almost equal numbers of people who like each brand.

But we have a film here that goes through what sets them apart.

Längd, flex och bredd

Längden rekommenderar vi att du väljer på samma sätt som för en vanlig snowboard,

Flexen ligger oftast på medium till hård. Mjuka splitboards blir lätt skvalpiga i hög fart eller tung snö, och eftersom man sällan kör park på en split prioriterar de flesta stabilitet.

Bredden är värd att kika på om du har stora fötter. En bräda som är för smal gör att tårna eller hälarna sticker ut över kanten och tar i snön i svängarna. Har du stora boots, titta på en bredare modell.

Välja splitboardbindningar

Vi jobbar med de tre största varumärkena för splitboardbindningar: Karakoram, Spark R&D och Union. Vi får många frågor om vilken som är bäst, och det är tyvärr en smaksak, det är nästan lika många som gillar respektive märke. En splitboardbindning fungerar i två lägen, ett walk-mode/gå-läget som gör att du kan gå uppför med bindningen fastspänd, och ett låst läge tvärs över brädan när du ska åka ner. I filmen nedan går vi igenom vad som skiljer dem åt.

För den som vill gå riktigt lätt och redan är van vid pjäxor finns även splitboard med hardboots. Det är lite av ett nischval för längre turer och mer alpin terräng, men för rätt person är det en game changer.

Different bindings for splitboard

Välja stighudar

Stighudarna fäster under brädans två halvor och är det som gör att du tar dig uppför utan att glida bakåt. Det finns två vägar att gå. Universala stighudar kommer i olika längder (S, M, L) och passar alla splitboards, och till dem får du med en kniv för att anpassa bredden till just din bräda. Sedan finns det färdiga stighudar för din splitboard om du väljer rätt modell, som anges vid varje bräda. Vi har Jones stighudar som görs av Pomoca, en av de marknadsledande i området.

Vi har även bra tillbehör för stighudar, där du kan behandla huden för bättre glid och bättre motstånd mot att bli fuktig (och därmed frysa).

Choosing rods

Here we have selected those that we think are suitable for splitboarding, this means that they take up little space in the backpack and are reliable. Then you can choose a little on weight, fixed length or adjustable length.

Three-piece poles take up less space, and telescopic poles are a little more durable. Carbon is light and stiff, but is a little more sensitive to impacts. But they all hold up well if you are careful with them!

Other equipment

A must-have when leaving the piste and entering the off-piste is a shovel, probe and tranciver.

A good backpack that can hold what you want and need to bring with you, keep in mind that hiking boots, poles, shovel and probe are things that you always bring. If you want to take a packed lunch, water and an extra jacket, it will quickly become full.

Splitboardpaket eller bygga själv

Ska du börja från noll är ett splitboardpaket ofta det enklaste sättet att komma igång. Då får du bräda, bindningar och stighudar i en kombination som funkar ihop, oftast till ett bättre pris än om du köper delarna var för sig.

Har du redan koll på vad du vill ha, eller äger något av delarna, bygger du smartare själv. Då matchar du bindning och bräda efter din egen åkstil. Båda vägarna funkar, det beror lite på var du är i din splitboardresa.
